Biped setup rigging tutorial in 3DS Max
This Rigging in 3DS Max or 3DS Max Rigging free tutorial informs you how to make Rigging or Rig setup in 3D Studio Max.
Hi all, in this pre-animation chapter we will learn how to Rig a character for animation using Biped system which is inbuilt in 3DS Max for quick rigging.
After the modeling procedure ‘Rigging setup for the Character’ is a very vital subject because without the rigging procedure you can’t animate it as you desire. Also, professional quality rigging depends on the flexibility of the rigged character to meet any kind of animation challenge. A well rigged character is more flexible to animate and easy to handle.
So, here in this 3DS Max Rigging Tutorial I want to show you how to rig a human character using the inbuilt Biped system in 3DS Max. You will find character head or facial rigging in separate part. Here I am trying to show you the rigging of the body part only.
In the above image you can see that I prepare a nude girl character model to demonstrate the 3DS Max Rigging procedure. To rig the character at first we have to create a biped character.
To generate the Biped character you have to go to the system tab under create panel then choose biped as shown below. Now drag the mouse in the viewport holding the left mouse key to create a biped character. In the picture below you can see the biped character is smaller than the body object.
Now, you have to resize the Biped character. To resize, make sure that the bip01 (the biped character’s base object) is selected then go to the Motion panel and press the ‘Figure mode’ button. Now, you can change or modify the biped figure. Here I changed the Body Type to Female from the drop-down list then increased the height value to get the same height of this girl character model. In the Structure category you can set the finger value to 5 and the finger links value to 3 as a real hand.
Now, go to the front view-port. Here, we have to match the shape of the Biped character roughly with the girl model. Here, we will notice, we have to stretch the arms and legs to fit with this girl body. To do this, select the rotate tool and also select the right upper arm and then rotate it to align with the girl’s upper arm.
Now, select the opposite button. It will select the left-upper-arm of the Biped character and do the same task to align the left arm with the girl’s left-upper-arm. Similarly fit the right and left leg also.
Notice that arms are still smaller than the girl body. Now scale it using the scale tool.
Exit the figure mode. Then go to the left view-port and select the bip01 (the biped base object) and move the biped character into the girl body. Still the bip01 is selected. Then select the Figure mode again, scale and rotate the sub-objects of the structure as necessary to fit properly with the character model.
Go to the top viewport and select both the right and left upper arm again by holding the Ctrl (keyboard shortcuts) key and change the Reference Coordinate System to Local. Now, rotate the arms to set them properly into the girl object’s arms position. Similarly adjust the main body parts of the Biped structure like spine, legs etc. Position the finger joints perfectly as well as the other parts of this biped object. Now, we can give skin to this biped character.
You know that without the skinning procedure the Rigging task doesn’t get complete. But in this 3DS Max Rigging Tutorial I want to give you the basic idea on how to create a Biped character and position the body parts of it with a ready model.
To follow this 3DS Max Rigging tutorial you have to generate a human character roughly.
